Ahmad Shah Bahadur ascended the Mughal throne in 1748 following the death of Muhammad Shah, inheriting an empire already hollowed out by Nader Shah's 1739 sack of Delhi and the ongoing fragmentation of provincial authority. His five-year reign saw the Marathas extract formal tribute and the Afghans under Ahmad Shah Durrani press repeatedly into the Punjab. Sarhind, positioned on the principal road between Delhi and Lahore, remained one of the few northern mints still functioning under nominal Mughal control throughout this period.
KM#446.16 distinguishes the Sarhind attribution within a reign that spread its silver output across a shrinking roster of active mints.
