Ahmad Shah Bahadur's reign (1748–1754) coincided with the rapid disintegration of Mughal central authority following Nadir Shah's 1739 sack of Delhi, which stripped the imperial treasury and shattered the dynasty's pretense of control over its provincial mints. Arcot, seat of the Nawabs of the Carnatic, operated with increasing autonomy through this period — nominally issuing coinage in the emperor's name while functioning as an effectively independent power navigating between the Marathas, the Nizam of Hyderabad, and an expanding European presence on the Coromandel Coast.
The Arcot rupee circulated widely enough that the English East India Company adopted it as a monetary benchmark for its own early South Indian operations.
