Ahmad Shah Durrani founded his empire in 1747 following the assassination of Nader Shah, and his coinage was central to asserting legitimacy over a territory stretching from eastern Persia to the Punjab. The Durrani rupee deliberately echoed Mughal weight standards — the 11.5g specification was no accident but a calculated move to ensure acceptance in markets long accustomed to Mughal silver.
KM#283.1 is distinguished from related varieties by its specific mint attribution. Ahmad Shah operated multiple mints across his domains, and die-linked specimens have helped researchers trace the administrative reach of Kandahar's central authority during his later campaigns into northern India.
