Additional information

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands used their own plastic rupee tokens — not coins — as a closed currency system from 1977 until 1978, when Australian dollar coinage replaced them entirely. This 2023 issue revives the rupee denomination purely as a collector piece, referencing a monetary experiment that lasted barely a year in practice and was itself a late echo of the plantation scrip system the Clunies-Ross family had used to control the island economy since the nineteenth century.
