Obverse description Effigy of Queen Victoria as a young queen, draped and crowned, facing left, as designed by William Wyon. The legend VICTORIA QUEEN encircles the portrait along the outer border. Superimposed on the obverse is a circular indented countermark bearing the Arabic inscription الشيخ سعيد في راس باب المندب (Shaykh Sa'id fi Ra's Bab al-Mandab), applied by local authority at Ra's Bab al-Mandab circa 1880–1890. The countermark is struck in an incuse circular punch, partially overlapping the portrait field.
