Reval — modern Tallinn — issued its own municipal coinage under Swedish suzerainty, a right the city jealously guarded through repeated petitions to Stockholm. Carl XI was only thirteen when he acceded in 1660, and these small silver pieces were struck during the regency period, when the Swedish crown's administrative grip on its Baltic possessions was loosely held. The ribbon variety distinguishes this emission from closely related dies and is the detail collectors use to navigate what is otherwise a compressed and difficult series.
