Gibraltar's "Royal" denomination was introduced in 1997 as a crown-sized collector issue, sidestepping the pound series entirely to target the commemorative market. The series leaned heavily on religious and monarchical imagery during a period when Gibraltar was reasserting its cultural identity against renewed Spanish sovereignty pressure — the 1999 referendum on joint sovereignty was still two years away, but the political climate was already shaping how the territory projected its British and Christian heritage.
