The Roue d'Aix is a local complementary currency launched by the Association S.E.V.E. to encourage spending within the Aix-en-Provence economic network — part of a broader wave of French monnaies locales that accelerated after the 2014 Loi sur l'économie sociale et solidaire formally recognized such instruments. Participating businesses agree to accept the notes at par with the euro, and redemption is handled through periodic clearing with the issuing association rather than any banking institution.
Printed locally in Aix, which is unusual — most French complementary currencies contract out to specialist printers elsewhere.
