The Cyrillic legend 'ГОД ВОДЯНОГО ТИГРА' arcs along the upper periphery, referencing the Chinese zodiac Year of the Water Tiger. Additional information

Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border — has issued its own coinage since the early 1990s despite lacking recognition from any United Nations member state. The Transnistrian Republican Bank produces these coins partly as collectibles and partly to assert the trappings of statehood, a function that explains the steady stream of themed issues including Chinese zodiac pieces like this one.

KM# 286 is a relatively recent entry in that zodiac series. Mintage figures for Transnistrian issues are rarely published with transparency.
