Descripción del anverso The obverse features a central dark inner circle containing a detailed architectural depiction of the façade of the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater building, rendered in a neoclassical style. Above the building, along the upper arc of the inner circle, the inscription 'НАЦЫЯНАЛЬНЫ АКАДЭМІЧНЫ' appears in small Cyrillic lettering. Below the building, the word 'ТЭАТР' is prominently displayed in large Cyrillic letters, followed by 'Янкі Купалы' in stylized script and '100 год' beneath it. The date '2020' appears to the left in the field, and the denomination '1 РУБЕЛЬ' is inscribed along the lower outer margin. The legend 'РЭСПУБЛІКА БЕЛАРУСЬ' encircles the design along the outer rim, flanked by a decorative dot and the state emblem of the Republic of Belarus at the top.

Descripción del reverso The reverse displays a full-length figure of Paulinka, the iconic heroine of Yanka Kupala's eponymous play, depicted in a traditional Belarusian folk costume. The female figure stands centrally in a graceful pose with arms outstretched, wearing an elaborately embroidered dress with a wide, flowing skirt decorated with floral folk motifs, a fitted bodice, and a floral headdress. The image is rendered against a dark frosted field, giving strong contrast to the finely detailed costume. The name 'Паўлінка' appears in stylized Cyrillic script along the upper arc of the inner circle above the figure.

Información adicional

Yanka Kupala — the pen name of Ivan Dominikovich Lutsevich — is among the most politically loaded cultural figures in Belarusian history. The theater named after him was established in Minsk in 1920, making 2020 its centenary. Kupala himself died in 1942 under circumstances that remain disputed: the official Soviet account ruled his fall from a Moscow hotel staircase an accident, though many Belarusian scholars have long suspected otherwise.

The commemorative rouble series from the National Bank of Belarus has used the Kupala theater as a subject at a moment of particular irony — 2020 was also the year the theater's own director and much of its ensemble resigned en masse in protest of post-election political repression.
