The Moscow 1980 Olympics were the first Summer Games held in a socialist country, and the Soviet state treated the entire series of commemorative roubles as much a propaganda exercise as a numismatic program. This particular issue — one of several architectural subjects in the series — depicts Moscow State University's Stalinist skyscraper on Sparrow Hills, completed in 1953 and for a time the tallest building in Europe. The Soviets minted these in bulk for tourist hard-currency sales, knowing Western visitors would buy them; actual domestic circulation was negligible.
