Venera-3, launched by the Soviet Union in November 1965, became the first spacecraft to reach the surface of another planet when it impacted Venus in March 1966 — though contact was lost before any data could be transmitted. Pridnestrovie has issued a consistent series of commemoratives honoring Soviet space achievements, a program that functions as much as national identity politics as numismatics: the unrecognized state uses these coins to project legitimacy and historical continuity with the USSR.
