Belarus issued this coin in 1996 to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations — a politically pointed gesture from a country that had held UN membership since 1945, despite not being a sovereign state at the time. The Byelorussian SSR was granted a founding UN seat largely through Soviet diplomatic pressure on Roosevelt and Churchill at Yalta, making it one of the only non-independent entities to sign the original UN Charter.
