Belarus joined the United Nations as a founding member in 1945 — unusual given that it was not an independent state but a Soviet republic, a concession extracted by Stalin to inflate Soviet bloc voting power in the General Assembly. This coin marks the UN's 50th anniversary, an occasion that prompted commemorative issues from dozens of member states in 1995–96.
