The timing here is worth noting: this rouble commemorates the 1988 Seoul Games but was struck nearly a decade later, in 1997, as part of a retrospective Soviet and Russian sports series issued by the Central Bank. Russia produced several such delayed commemoratives through the 1990s, revisiting athletic milestones the Soviet state had celebrated — or in some cases, failed to celebrate — at the time of the original event.
