Issued as part of Russia's ongoing commemorative rouble program, this piece marks the Bolshoi's 1997 season rather than any singular anniversary — the theater had already celebrated its 220th in 1996. The Bank of Russia struck thousands of silver commemoratives throughout the 1990s, many with low mintages, as hard-currency sales to collectors abroad became a meaningful revenue stream during the post-Soviet fiscal squeeze.
