Transnistria — formally the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — issues its own currency despite no UN member state recognizing its independence, a situation unchanged since its 1992 war with Moldova. The Square of the Heroes in Bendery commemorates that conflict directly; Bendery (also rendered Tighina) was the site of some of the heaviest fighting, including a June 1992 offensive in which Moldovan police and military forces entered the city, triggering intervention by the Russian 14th Army.
The 14th Army's presence remains contentious to this day, with roughly 1,500 Russian troops still stationed in the region.
