The "Spasy" rouble is part of Belarus's extensive folk calendar series, issued by the National Bank to document traditional Slavic seasonal observances. Spasy — a cluster of three Orthodox harvest festivals observed in August — blends Christian feast days with much older agrarian ritual, including the blessing of apples, honey, and grain in successive weeks. Belarus has been unusually prolific in issuing commemorative base-metal roubles of this type; the oxidized copper-nickel finish was applied deliberately to evoke an antique appearance rather than reflect circulation wear.
