Issued by the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — a breakaway state unrecognized by the United Nations — this rouble is legal tender within a territory whose independent existence dates to a brief armed conflict with Moldova in 1992. PMR maintains its own currency, central bank, and monetary policy entirely outside the international financial system, giving its coinage a peculiar legal status: valid within roughly 4,000 square kilometers, nowhere else.
