| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device comprises the heraldic shield (coat of arms) of Shikotan island, depicting a sea otter resting on stylized waves in the lower portion and three scallop shells arranged in a row along the upper chief. The shield is set within a plain border. Encircling the upper periphery of the coin, the Cyrillic legend 'КУРИЛЬСКИЕ ОСТРОВА' (Kuril Islands) arcs along the rim, while the legend 'ШИКОТАН' (Shikotan) is inscribed along the lower arc. A decorative border of small star-like ornaments frames the inner field. |

Shikotan is one of the four southernmost Kuril Islands occupied by the Soviet Union in the final days of World War II and never returned to Japan, a dispute that has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty to this day. This coin was issued as part of the ongoing Russian Geographic Society series documenting territories whose sovereignty remains, diplomatically speaking, unresolved.
