Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing wildlife conservation series, this rouble was issued at a time when the post-Soviet mint infrastructure was still finding its footing with collector-grade silver production. The sand mole-rat (Spalax arenarius) is endemic to a narrow strip of southern Russia near the Caspian Sea and was already listed as endangered when this coin was struck.
