正面描述	The obverse features the double-headed eagle after the design of artist Ivan Bilibin, centered in the field. A circular legend at the top reads «ОДИН РУБЛЬ 1996 г.» (ONE ROUBLE 1996) and at the bottom «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA). Below the eagle, technical inscriptions denote the metal, fineness (Ag 900), the Leningrad Mint trademark (ЛМД), and the fine silver content (15.55 g).

The sand mole-rat (Spalax arenarius) is endemic to a narrow strip of southern Russia near the Caspian Sea and was already listed as endangered when this coin was struck.
