The "Running" rouble — properly the 1991 Olympic issue for the Barcelona Games — was struck by the Soviet Mint in what turned out to be the USSR's final year of existence. The August coup attempt against Gorbachev happened while these were still in distribution channels. Soviet Olympic commemoratives from this terminal period were produced in both collector and circulation qualities, and the copper-nickel circulation strikes like this one were widely hoarded outside the USSR almost immediately, meaning uncirculated examples are not difficult to find.
