Aanvullende informatie

Rogvolod was a Varangian prince who ruled Polotsk in the late 10th century — his daughter Rogneda was sought in marriage by both Yaropolk of Kiev and Vladimir of Novgorod. When she refused Vladimir with a reported insult about his illegitimate birth, Vladimir responded by killing her father and brothers, taking her by force, and later deposing her after she attempted to murder him in his sleep. The episode is one of the more documented acts of dynastic violence in the Primary Chronicle.

Polotsk itself became the first appanage principality in Kievan Rus, and Belarus has built considerable national identity around it as a founding political center.
