Beschrijving keerzijde Central design features four crowned Cyrillic letter П (for Pavel/Paul) arranged in the form of a cross with the Roman numeral I at the centre, all within a decorative frame. The Cyrillic legend 'НЕ НАМЪ, А ИМЯНИ ТВОЕМУ' arcs around the periphery with the date 1797 at the lower left and a bullet stop separating the legend elements, within a beaded border. The cross monogram design is characteristic of Paul I coinage imagery. The overall composition follows the style of late 18th-century Imperial Russian coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

This is a modern commemorative restrike issued by the Saint Petersburg Mint in 2009 as part of Russia's ongoing series reproducing historic coinage designs. The original 1797 Paul I rouble was itself a politically charged object — Paul overhauled Russian coinage almost immediately upon taking the throne, partly to erase the aesthetic influence of his mother Catherine II, whose reign he despised.

The copper-nickel restrike carries no pretense of replicating the original silver fabric.
