This 2009 issue commemorates the coronation of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna, which took place on May 14, 1896, at the Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin — the traditional site of tsarist coronations. The ceremony was followed days later by the Khodynka Tragedy, in which a crowd stampede on the outskirts of Moscow killed over 1,300 people gathered for public celebrations. Nicholas's decision to attend a French ambassador's ball that same evening permanently damaged his public standing.
