Mikhail Savitsky survived Auschwitz and Dachau, and spent decades translating that experience into paint. His "Partisans" series, begun in the 1960s, became some of the most unflinching figurative work produced anywhere in the Soviet bloc — tolerated in Minsk partly because partisan iconography aligned with state mythology, even when Savitsky's actual intent cut far deeper. Belarus has issued collector roubles honoring him across multiple years, this 2022 piece falling within a broader numismatic program celebrating national cultural figures. Savitsky died in 2010, having received the Hero of Belarus designation in 2006.
