Transnistria's rouble series occupies a peculiar corner of monetary history — issued by a state recognised by no UN member, backed by no formal international agreement, yet functioning as the sole legal tender within a strip of territory between the Dniester river and the Ukrainian border. The 1 Rouble denomination sits at the low end of a system that has run in parallel with Moldovan lei, Ukrainian hryvnia, and Russian roubles since the early 1990s breakaway.
The 2007 series replaced an earlier plastic note of the same denomination. Paper was an unusual step backward for a currency that had previously leaned into polymer as a point of distinction.
