Additional information

The Marbled Murrelet became internationally notorious in conservation circles in 1974 when a chick was discovered in an old-growth fir in California — the first confirmed North American nest, found entirely by accident by a tree surgeon. Russia's Pacific coast populations, which this coin references, nest similarly in old coastal forest and face comparable pressure from logging. The Bank of Russia's wildlife series of the mid-2000s drew heavily on species listed in the Russian Red Book, which formally catalogues threatened fauna under federal protection.
