Part of Russia's ongoing wildlife conservation series, this rouble was issued the same year the goitered gazelle — known locally as the jeiran — was listed as vulnerable across its Central Asian range, with populations in Russia essentially confined to the Dagestan steppes. The series itself was a continuation of Soviet-era nature coins repurposed under the new federation, using the same .900 silver specification that Gosbank had employed for similar issues before 1991.
