Hamza Hakim-zade Niyazi, the Uzbek playwright and poet commemorated here, was murdered in 1929 by religious conservatives who opposed his campaigns against the veil and traditional gender roles in Soviet Central Asia. The Soviet state subsequently elevated him to martyrdom status, and his name was attached to theaters, streets, and institutions across the Uzbek SSR for decades.
This rouble is part of the long-running Soviet commemorative series marking cultural and historical figures — issued the same year Gorbachev's reforms were unraveling the political order Hamza had died to serve.
