Belarus launched its commemorative rouble series in the early 2000s to document the historical cities of the country, with Grodno — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Belarus, first mentioned in chronicles from 1127 — among the earliest subjects chosen. The city's significance owes much to its position on the Neman River and its long history under Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian rule before becoming part of Soviet Belarus.
Copper-nickel commemoratives of this series saw modest mintages and were not intended for general circulation, though they carried legal tender status.
