Transnistria's coin series commemorating historic cities of the region is one of the more unusual numismatic programs to emerge from any unrecognized state. Grigoriopol, founded in 1792 by a decree of Catherine the Great as a settlement for Greek colonists displaced by the Russo-Turkish Wars, sits on the left bank of the Dniester — squarely within the territory Transnistria controls but that Moldova claims as its own.
No international monetary authority recognizes Transnistrian roubles as legal tender beyond the republic's own borders.
