Friedrich Zander was a Soviet rocket pioneer who was among the first to advocate seriously for interplanetary spaceflight, founding the GIRD research group in Moscow in 1931 alongside figures who would later drive the Soviet space program. He died of typhus in 1933, never seeing any of his propulsion theories tested at scale.
