Belarus began issuing its long-running sports-themed rouble series in the early 2000s, partly as a revenue exercise targeting thematic collectors rather than circulation. Freestyle wrestling holds particular national significance — Belarusian wrestlers have been among the most decorated in Olympic and World Championship competition since the Soviet era, a tradition the country actively promoted as a post-independence identity marker.
