The Constantine Rouble is one of the most famous pattern coins in Russian numismatic history. Struck in November 1825 during the succession crisis following Alexander I's death, a small number of proof pieces were produced in anticipation of Constantine Pavlovich taking the throne — before he revealed he had secretly renounced his claim years earlier. Nicholas I ordered the dies destroyed and the coins suppressed.
Only five originals are confirmed to exist. This 2009 issue from the Saint Petersburg Mint is a modern restrike commemorating that episode, not a period piece.
