Additional information

Transnistria — internationally unrecognized, economically isolated, and running its own currency since 1994 — has produced an extensive commemorative coinage program that functions more as cultural assertion than monetary instrument. These pieces circulate legally within the territory but are effectively worthless outside it. The Alexander Nevsky Church in Bendery (Tighina to Moldovans, who still claim the city) sits in one of the most contested urban spaces in the frozen conflict zone, a city whose 1992 battle left the police station pocked with bullet holes that remain unrepaired to this day.
