The Mir Castle complex, built in the late 15th century by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, passed through several noble hands before the Radziwill family expanded it into one of the most architecturally layered fortresses in the region. It was badly damaged during Napoleon's 1812 campaign and again in World War I, sitting partially ruinous for decades before Soviet-era restoration work began. Belarus issued this coin just seven years after independence, a period when the newly sovereign state was actively constructing a national identity around its architectural heritage. Mir received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000, two years after this coin appeared.
