Transnistria's zodiac rouble series was issued by the Transnistrian Republican Bank, the central bank of a breakaway state that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any UN member nation. The series offered the bank a rare avenue for international numismatic revenue, since Transnistrian currency has no legal tender status outside its own territory and limited practical circulation even within it.
Nickel plated steel was the practical choice for a state operating under chronic economic sanctions and restricted access to metal markets.
