Belarus redenominated its currency in 2000, lopping four zeros off the ruble to address the accumulated inflation of the post-Soviet collapse — meaning this 2002 coin nominally equaled 10,000 of the old rubles issued just a decade earlier. The Belarusbank series was issued to mark the savings bank's 75th anniversary, making it a commemorative rather than a circulation strike.
The redenomination itself proved insufficient; Belarus would do it again in 2016, removing another four zeros from a currency that had never stabilized.
