Sa'ud bin Abdulaziz ascended to the throne in November 1953 following his father Ibn Saud's death, and this issue reflects the early years of a reign that would prove financially turbulent. Sa'ud's chronic overspending nearly bankrupted the kingdom by the early 1960s, forcing a transfer of executive power to Crown Prince Faisal in 1958. The high silver fineness — .917, matching British sterling standard — was a deliberate continuation of the monetary policy established under Ibn Saud to maintain credibility with Gulf trading partners skeptical of the nascent Saudi monetary system.
