Ajman, smallest of the Trucial States by both area and population, issued a flood of commemorative and essai coinage in the late 1960s and early 1970s almost entirely for the collector market — a revenue strategy common among the smaller sheikhdoms before UAE federation in 1971 effectively ended their individual monetary ambitions. Most of these issues never circulated. The "3 dates" variety reflects a deliberate merchandising tactic: presenting the same essai with multiple date combinations to maximize collector appeal and sales volume.
