The 1932 riyal was part of Iraq's inaugural national coinage, issued the same year the country formally gained independence from the British Mandate and was admitted to the League of Nations. The Royal Mint in London struck the series under contract — Iraq had no mint of its own. Faisal I died the following year, making this the only riyal type to bear his effigy.
The .500 fineness was a deliberate concession to silver economics of the period, matching the reduced standard already common in British colonial issues.
