Orry — the mascot for the 15th Asian Games held in Doha in December 2006 — was the first time Qatar used a commemorative coin issue to anchor a major international sporting event's branding campaign. The character, an Arabian oryx rendered in a distinctly modern graphic style, was developed specifically for those games as Qatar positioned itself ahead of broader Gulf infrastructure ambitions that would define the following decade.
Qatar hosted the 15th Asian Games, the largest sporting event the country had staged to that point, with 45 nations competing across 39 disciplines.
