Abdullah bin Abdulaziz ascended to the throne in 2005 after decades as crown prince and, effectively, acting ruler during his half-brother Fahd's long incapacitation. The bimetallic 1 Riyal was introduced under his reign as part of a broader rationalization of Saudi coinage that consolidated smaller denominations and reduced the number of circulating types.
