Malaysia hosted the 2000 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur — the world's premier badminton team championships — and Bank Negara issued this coin to mark the occasion. The Thomas Cup, contested by men's national teams, dates to 1949; the Uber Cup, its women's counterpart, to 1957. Indonesia had dominated both competitions for decades, but Malaysia's hosting was a point of national pride in a sport the country treats with unusual seriousness.
