Malaysia hosted APEC in 2020 under the theme "Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Asia-Pacific" — a summit conducted entirely virtually, the first in APEC's history, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The commemorative ringgit was issued to mark that presidency regardless, making it an unusual artifact of an international economic forum that never physically convened.
