Malaysia's palm oil industry traces its commercial origins to 1917, when the first plantation-scale cultivation was established in Tennamaram and Sungei Karang — a century of dominance that by 2017 had made the country one of the world's two largest palm oil exporters, accounting for roughly 39% of global supply. Bank Negara issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative program under the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Muhammad V, who ascended in late 2016.
Nordic gold — the same copper-aluminium-zinc-tin alloy used in euro coins — was a deliberate choice for circulation-quality commemoratives of this period.
