This coin commemorates Radio Television Malaysia, the national broadcaster founded in 1946 under British colonial administration as Radio Malaya. RTM's television service launched in 1963 — the same year as Malaysian independence consolidation — making it the oldest broadcaster in the country. The Nordic gold composition, an aluminum-bronze alloy developed in the 1990s specifically for circulation coinage resistant to counterfeiting, was adopted by Bank Negara for this commemorative series in part because of its distinctive color stability under prolonged handling.
