Issued to mark Malaysia Day — September 16, the date in 1963 when the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo, and Sarawak merged to form Malaysia — this coin appeared during a period when the government was actively promoting September 16 as a national holiday. That status was only officially gazetted in 2010, making 2013 effectively the third year it had been formally observed. The choice of Nordic gold, an aluminum-bronze alloy developed in the 1990s specifically for circulation coinage, reflects Bank Negara's preference for a visually distinct, corrosion-resistant issue that would stand apart from the standard Ringgit series.
