Issued to mark the centenary of the Royal Malaysian Navy, which was formally established in 1934 as the Straits Settlements Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve before evolving through independence into the Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia. The Nordic gold composition — an aluminum-bronze alloy developed in the early 1990s — was chosen for its resistance to corrosion, a practical consideration for a coin celebrating a maritime service.
